Loungewear Gets Sexy

We say loungewear, you say…

comfy? Lazy? Sunday spent at home?

What you probably don’t say is “latest celeb fashion trend.”

However since back in 2012, celebrities have been bucking the trend and bringing the indoors outdoors, making pyjamas and loungewear a legitimate fashion statement.

Of course, only certain brands, styles and patterns make it to the “acceptable outside” list, and obviously we stock them all here at UtilityBear.com!

Lounge Pants

Miranda Kerr is just one of many celebs making a statement in comfy pants – from the quirky patterns to travel long haul to the sports/yoga style for a morning at the park with the kiddies; these cool bottoms are no longer confined to days spent house cleaning or hungover-at-home.

And with some tailored cuts and cute styles from the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and their Iconic Cotton Long Pant, we’re glad this moment has come because it would simply be a waste if no one saw them!

And not of the “sweaty running” variety. No, stars such as Rihanna have been rocking the jogger look in recent years. Sometimes it’s a simple tee or hoodie combo to get to the gym or rehearsals, but more impressive is their integration into urban night-time style.

You could team these Jockey Off-White Melange Jogger Pants with a satin bomber jacket and high heeled boots for a new take on the utility sports luxe trends.

Yoga Pants

Ah, the humble yoga pant. No longer confined to the mirrored dance studio or gym-selfie, celebrities like Jessica Alba are regularly papped in a yoga pant ensemble, giving them that just-about-to-work-out look so popular among modern students and mums alike.

And what’s not to love about these Tommy Hilfiger Fitness Cropped Leggings? A stretchy tencel fabric blend for a supportive, stretchy fit and a beautiful navy for all seasons.

Sexy Pyjamas

Pajamas/Pyjamas/PJs/Jim Jams… call them what you like, but they have never really entered the real of fashion, despite many designer catwalk and celebrity attempts to make it so. But step in the new era of pyjamas – the slinky, designed pyjama pant, a la Rosie Huntington Whitely.

To achieve this look yourself Calvin Klein have brought out a beautiful set this season, with loungewear top to match. The Seductive Comfort Lace Trim pant will make you feel as comfy as home when you’re out and about (and looking chic while you do it!)

Hooray for Hoodies

Hoodies used to be a symbol of teenage rebellion (so much so they were almost banned from retail stores and public places back in the noughties!) But now, celerities are rocking oversized sweaters and hoodies as the acceptable “off day” get up to hid your sins and give your body  a Sunday break from being pushed in, pushed up and taped on a Saturday night!

Alessandra Ambrosio perfectly captures the trend and the trick, it seems, is to purposely buy a man’s oversized jacket/jumper to give the best effect. Look no further than our Tommy Hilfiger Cotton Blend Hoodie for the ultimate comfort and cut!

Fall Fashion Lingerie Trends 2016

Autumn Winter fashion runway shows from New York, London and Milan brought us a wealth of new and reborn trends for the coming Fall season.

Some trends are for outerwear only – including layering, metallics and ruffles.

Other trends however, can be updated easily in the underwear drawers of Lady Bears and we’re here to show you how!

Here at UtilityBear.com we believe in bringing the best designer quality and fashion styles to lingerie land and with every new fashion trend comes an equivalent matching item in the underwear drawer.

Varying tones of nude, camel and rose-gold return this Autumn Winter after their explosion in 2015, showcased for Fall by Céline, Loewe and Valentino among others.

Calvin Klein have found the perfect tone for this trend; named “Dune” and offered it in both top and bottom matching sets:

A trend usually reserved for the Summer months, the off-shoulder peasant look is moving through the Autumn months in both top and dress styles. Bigger, 80s ruffle styles donned the models of Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant too.

Of course a lack of straps or shoulder fabric requires a good-fitting supportive bra that is also strapless. Thankfully our friends at Fantasie have created one of the best in their smoothing underwear strapless nude bra:

Floral patterns are a regular feature on catwalks from year-to-year, however we’re most used to seeing them in bright or pastel colours for Springtime. The 2016 floral trend is much earthier in tone, encompassing an array of designs from bright oriental to tight gypsy field. It was seen at Balenciaga and Christian Dior to name a few.

Again, Fantasie transfer this trend into lingerie better than most in our opinion. The bright Summer styles were a huge success on UtilityBear.com and we expect similar success for the rich, luxurious Autumn-Winter Darcie floral set too:

The quintessential trend of the darker months – lace brings an air of vintage style and glamour without compromising on coverage. Keno and Marc Jacobs had a strong ‘Victoriana’ influence for their Fall shows in particular.

Lace is one trend that converts really well into the underwear fashion trends, as it is so easily added to comfortable shapes. Our latest favourite comes from Jockey who have added lace touches to their bikini briefs, hipster briefs and pyjama shorts for the coming season:

The 4 Essential Mens T-shirt Styles

We’re all for minimalism here at Utility Bear Towers.

Too much clothes = too much washing and ironing. And we couldn’t do that to the Lady Bears (wee jokes!)

In all seriousness though, we know a fair bit about clothing and underwear by now, seeing as how it’s our business to find the best and bring it to you.

And we’ve learned that the old adage is in fact true; less is more.

If you invest in the right cuts, styles and colours, you can buy just four T-shirt styles that will see your wardrobe through all seasons, trends and occasions:

1. Crew Neck

Crew neck is the classic T-shirt style made famous by Marlon Brando. You’ll recognise it by the close-cut round neck, short sleeves and the medium-fit around the torso.

Not generally the best idea for wearing under shirts because the sleeve lines show – we’d recommend the tank vests or long-sleeve options below if you’re chilly in the office – however that’s OK, because they look mighty fine on their own. Especially if you throw a groovy design on the front. Not to blow our own trumpet, but…

Buy Now

However, don’t get carried away with the latest design trends. With all T-shirts it’s a good idea to own a selection of basic , plain colours that underpin any seasonal colour trends: usually white, black and grey. Brands like Tommy Hilfiger will often produce these in handy multipacks for you:

Buy Now

This way you’ll always have a classic Tee in the wardrobe for any occasion.

2. V Neck

Ah V-Neck, the great divider of the men’s fashion world. Some grizzlies love them, others loathe them, largely due to the variation in the depth of the neck that has become popular in modern times.

The fact is, a well-cut V neck T-shirt has its place in your wardrobe, particularly for special nights out where you want a more tailored look. Or perhaps underneath a dress shirt that is unbuttoned at the neck, to show a flash of colour or add depth to a layered look.

Our friends at Jockey often sell basic sets in double packs to ensure there’s always one to hand if you fall behind in the washing!

3. Tank Top

The vest style is noticeable by the absence of any sleeves. Might seem silly, but actually this makes for a really versatile T-shirt style.

Great for hot Summer days or holidays, when you don’t want the dreaded “Farmer’s Tan” lines on the ol’ biceps. Likewise, in Winter months, tank tops can be worn under shirts and jumpers as an added layer, in the style of a thermal vest.

We always look to Wolsey for these items, because no-one knows under garments for all seasons like the guys who warmed the toes of the first Antarctic explorers!

4. Long-Sleeve Top

“It’s not a T-shirt!” we hear you cry. Well that’s a debate for another day.

What we can all agree on, is that no essentials wardrobe is complete without a close cut long-sleeve top. It’s one of the most versatile pieces of clothing, worn on its own for a simply-tailored look, or worn underneath casual shirts with the sleeves rolled up.

Like it’s Tank Top cousin, the long sleeved T-shirt can be used to bolster the warm layers of an outfit in colder months, or worn alone for a chic look in warmer climes.

Again, all our designer brands excel in shape, comfort and style when it comes to basics, like this black specimen from Jockey:

8 Fun Facts for National Underwear Day

Happy National Underwear Day!

The day dedicated to all things undies.

Underwear: the first thing we put on in the morning and the last thing we take off at night.

They support us, flatter us, protect us and comfort us.

No wonder underwear is our favourite here at UtilityBear.com!

So in honour of this most fun of national holidays, and to celebrate a host of new designer underwear stock lines on our website, we wanted to bring you some of our favourite fun facts about everyone’s favourite “smalls”…

Married People Have Cleaner Underwear

No really, it’s a fact, the research says so. Granted they difference between the single folk and the married bears is small, but it’s still there.

Having someone at home everyday to impress with your nice new underwear is obviously a pretty good incentive for keeping those knickers clean!

The Egyptians Loved Underwear, Too

145 pairs, people! OK, he was a King and by their nature, Kings can go a bit overboard when it comes to possessions (I mean who needs a Gold coffin when you’re partying with the angels, right?)

But even in the earliest days of civilisation, humans understood the worth of a good pair of quality undies, and Tut wanted to make sure he had all his favourites with him in the afterlife!

Most Victoria Secret Models Are Brazilian!

It’s one of the most famous lingerie brands across the globe, almost mores for its annual catwalk show than for the underwear on the models themselves.

But incase you were wondering which country produces the most Angel-worthy ladies, then the answer is the Southern American capital. That’s next year’s holiday sorted then!

Americans Own A Lot Of Underwear

Like, 21 pairs a lot. That’s three weeks worth of fresh pants at any given moment, when we’ve all only got the one butt.

But then, this is a conundrum we understand at Utility Bear – there’s just too many great styles, new patterns and different fits to seriously choose between them!

Italians Wear Red Underwear For Luck

At least, the women do. And only on New Year’s Eve.But it’s an interesting idea.

Many people have a lucky pair of pants that they were to job interviews, sports games or – dare we say it – on a first date. If you haven’t picked your lucky colour yet, we’d take a leaf out of the boot-shaped-country’s book!

People Buy Royal Old Underwear

Unlike Tutankhamen, Queen Victoria wasn’t buried with her undies.

Somehow, someone got a hold of them. Maybe they found them somewhere. We don’t have all the details… ANYWAY, they decided to sell them at auction. And someone paid almost £10,000 for them. Crikey!

Underwear World Record Holder

In 2010, a ten year old boy in New York decided his life’s work to that point could be more meaningful and he took it upon himself to become a record holder!

215 pairs of trunks later, and Jack holds the World Record for the most underwear worn at any one time. Someone even filmed it. But we didn’t post the images because, well Jack is 16 now and he may regret his decision…

Underwear As Outerwear Isn’t New

Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Gigi Hadid is doing it, but the fashion trend of underwear as outerwear that rose to prominence last season is far from a new idea.

Famed French lady Marie Antoinette was apparently the first to don her frillies in public – much to the scandal of the French court at the time – when she wore her chemise as a fashionable dress outside the bedroom!

Put The Fun Into Your Underwear

Whether you’re married and in need of more fresh pairs, or you’re looking for that perfect elusive red lucky pair, you can shop for all the latest designer boxers, trunks, bras, socks and accessories at UtilityBear.com

(And you won’t have to pay ten grand at auction, either!)

Travellers Guide to Packing Underwear

Holiday time! Oh the excitement!

When it comes to travel, whether it’s short city breaks, a week-long beach resort stay or a year of trekking across the globe, we are ultimately divided into 2 types of bears:

Those who love packing suitcases, and those who loathe it…

Suitcase Packing Problems

You’ll find though, if you dig a bit deeper, that those of us who see suitcase packing as a necessary evil, do so because we find it difficult –

  • How do you know what you’ll need?
  • How do you fold it so it doesn’t need ironed?
  • How do you fit it all in?!

Now you’d think given the small-in-size nature of undies that packing underwear would be the least of your worries…

Unfortunately, it can be just as much a headache as deciding which outfits and shoes to pack:

  • Which colour underwear is needed to go with each outfit?
  • How often will you be able to wash it?
  • So how many pairs do you need?
  • Will there be romance on the cards?
  • So do you need lingerie, too?
  • Is it too cold for cotton or too hot for lycra?

Fear not grizzlies! We’re here to help.

We’ve scoured the internet to find the best (and ignore the worst!) tips for packing a suitcase that includes our much favoured items – and in our opinion, the best part of the outfit – the undies!

Top Tips For Holiday Packing

The first job is to get organised and plan exactly which items you’ll need for your trip, whether it’s comfort for trekking or designer thongs and trunks that won’t show under your white linen trousers on the beach.

Then look at your washing facilities.

Will you be hand washing in a river?

Sharing a hotel laundry room?

Or will you have your own washing machine and balcony to dry items in the sun?

The ability to freshen up will drastically affect how many pairs you need to pack.

Underwear for Long-Haul and Travelling

The best items for the adventurous among us will have the same qualities you’d look for in items for working out or running (we previously blogged our advice for gym underwear here and marathon socks here).

That means the materials and fit will be:

  • Lightweight
  • Breathable
  • Perspiration/odour-resistent

Unfortunately, most people assume natural materials like cotton are the best because they will reduce irritation, but it’s actually a nightmare to dry in hot places!

We recommend items such that are specifically made for activities where you sweat, like sportswear.

Jockey’s Microfibre range will give you all those benefits and they look great too!

How to Pack Underwear

Just like with clothes, rolling underwear takes up less space in your suitcase than folding it.

But you can also be extra clever with where you put it once it’s rolled up – inside shoes and down the side bars of suitcases are great unused spaces.

Just don’t forget you hid them there when you’re unpacking!

Another consideration, if you’re travelling with hand luggage only or going to exotic places where you might be security checked at customs, is to keep your underwear from falling out on the table in front of everyone (cringe).

This is more likely to happen if you’ve stuffed pants and socks all over the nooks and crannies of the bag.

A better idea here is to pack it tightly inside a clear, resealable plastic bag. That way the security attendant can easily see it and you’ll both avoid the embarrassment of lacy lingerie tumbling out onto the floor!

Suitcase Packing: Bras

As for the lady bears and bras; the trick is to fold them in (making it one cup instead of two) and then stacking them on top of each other in one corner of the bag.

But if you’re backpacking and seriously in need of space, the better option is to leave the underwires and padding at home, opting for sports bra styles that are easier to roll and wash.

Our designer brands now stock a wide range of this style of sports bra, bralette or bra top.

Our favourites include the Sloggi Sensual Fresh Bra Top, the iconic Calvin Klein bralette and the Freya Active sports bras.

Underwear Packing for Travel Emergencies

And finally, the tip Mammy Bear gives us but we never listen because we think it will never happen to us:

Pack spare underwear in your hand luggage/handbag incase they lose your luggage!

But it’s not just useful in suitcase emergencies, sometimes planes are delayed and you’re forced to stay an extra night in a hotel. Sometimes you feel extra grubby after a long haul flight or a race around a hot airport to make a connecting flight.

The joy you feel at finding the airport has free showers for passengers will be severely dented if you realise you have to put your nice clean body back into your grubby old boxers!

Now go forth and see the world grizzlies!

But make sure you buy all your designer underwear travel essentials here first, at Utility Bear.

The Power of Calvin Klein

It’s ironic that the same brand who promoted “going commando” in a nothing-comes-between-me-and-my-calvins jeans advert would became the same brand to make designer underwear the fashion norm a mere two years later.

Ironic, or just plain brilliant.

That is the power of Calvin Klein.

And we’re buzzing to announce that this iconic brand has landed at Utility Bear!

The History of Calvin Klein

With just one image (of Olympic pole-vaulter Tomás Hintnaus in Santorini) Calvin Klein thrust the traditional Y-front underwear from a boring clothing necessity to a fashion must-have of iconic proportions.

The posters were stolen overnight from the 25 New York bus shelters they appeared in and stores couldn’t keep their stock at a level to deal with consumer demand.

To this day, the logo-emblazoned waistband remains a pop culture staple. The recent campaign hashtag #mycalvins has garnered 300,000+ user generated photos online featuring everyone from celebrities to us mere mortals.

Speaking of celebrities, since the 1980s every big name in the game has been lining up to feature in a Calvin Klein commercial. Who can forget the pairing of budding rapper Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg and his co-star, Kate Moss (then 17) in 1992?

Images that have gone down in fashion history. The star of the campaign may have been in the entertainment industry but the technical man behind the product form would change underwear fashion forever – as Calvin Klein’s head of menswear design from 1990-95, John Varvatos was pioneering the “boxer brief” hybrid.

The brand, their hybrid style innovation and cutting-edge campaigns remain lusted after to this day.

Calvin Klein Brand Partnerships

The brand’s innovation and commitment to the underwear movement continued into the new century, when in 2002 the first ever 6-figure contract for a men’s underwear model was given to CK-bearing Australian Travis Fimmel. A succession of famous footballing faces followed, with Swede Freddie Ljungberg becoming one of the most famous campaigns of the decade.

The brand, style and cutting-edge campaigns remain lusted after to this day.

Calvin Klein: The Modern Day Classic

And as the latest campaign starring uber stars like Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner prove; the popularity of the simple CK brief hasn’t waned even as the brand enters middle-age (celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2011).

And simple briefs they are. In design, structure and comfort.

The styles have become a classic brand unto themselves, often copied but never fully matched. And seemingly impossible to improve, as little has changed beyond fabric technology and poster faces over the decades.

The allure of Calvin Klein underwear for both women and men remains devoid of the need for “bells and whistles.” There’s no lace, no detailing, nothing that takes away from the natural fit and athleticism of the human body.

Yet Calvin Klein remains the epitome of sexy underwear.

Proudly American, steeped in history, with a name band that imbues quality, effortless style and timeless design that has remained at the forefront of the industry for over three decades;

That’s why we all love Calvin Klein underwear!

In 2011, global sales for men’s and women’s Calvin Klein Underwear achieved more than one billion dollars at retail. The lines are available in thousands of points of sale worldwide.

And now, Calvin Klein underwear is available to shop online right here with us, at UtilityBear.com

The Best Underwear For Working Out

When was the last time you bought underwear specifically for the gym?

We’re not surprised.

But there are very good reasons for choosing the right undergarments before you work out.

Here we’ll help you make the best choice for your next visit:

No Commando

Some bears think it’s best to avoid any chaffing, visible lines or the all-too-common wedgies by going bare to the gym.

However bacteria and yeast thrive in a moist, warm environment. The best protection from infection is to wear some underwear under your workout gear to catch any sweat.

So it’s not the best idea to go commando.

However if you frequently wear bottoms with moisture-wicking capabilities, then you could workout underwear-free.

Underwear will also provide a barrier between the sweat and your clothes to avoid the dreaded #ButtSweat marks!

No Thongs

While many women hate the thought of VPL (visible panty lines), the alternative (thongs) are tight fitting and can slide back and forth while you exercise causing friction and heat which could lead to UTI’s (urinary tract infections) and vaginal bacterial infections.

Best to go with the VPL instead then!

No Fancy Pants

Avoid lace or silk, neither of which are breatheable fabrics. Cotton is good but some of the newer synthetic fabrics are specifically designed to keep you dry.

For repetitive movements, like running, cycling or cardio classes, buy seamless underwear that will be non-abrasive against your skin.

No Perfume

Don’t be fooled by scented pants or other crazy new sales pitches.

We have apocrine glands in the groin. Odour is a fact of life. You’ll get showered when you’re finished.

No one expects you to smell like a bed of roses while working out!

For Men:

Jockey sports underwear is a great choice for any gym activity or sport.

Their athletic underwear for men uses Coolmax technology.

Available in a range of styles including briefs, midway briefs and sport trunks with flat seams for added comfort.

For Women:

As important as the fabric and fit down below, it’s equally good for women to support their assets up top.

Exercise can cause discomfort and stretching of the breast tissue. Even slow exercises like yoga can feel easier with added support.

A good sports bra or supportive bra top from Sloggi will ensure natural fabrics and a comfortable fit while you work out.

Women’s Underwear Style Guide

In 1924 knickers became known as panties and by 1930 they were called panty briefs.

Regardless what you call them, just like a bra, finding the right style of knicker can make or break an outfit. Muffin-tops, VPL’s (Visible Panty Lines) and scrunching – the fashion faux-pas list is endless. And gone are the days when your only choice in the morning was between your trusty old briefs and a “G-string.” Now we’ve got Cheekinis, Hip-Huggers and “V-strings”! A rainbow of colours greet us, skyscraper-style waist sizes from low to high-rise and sci-fi sounding material choices like “breathable synthetics.” Confused? Us too.

But fear not shoppers, Utility Bear is here to guide you through the basics of the modern woman’s undergarment essentials, with everything you need to know but were afraid to ask…

What To Consider Before You Choose Your Underwear

There are lots of things that will dictate your choice of smalls. How much movement you do during the day, the types of clothes you wear on the outside, your leg size, waist size and whether or not anyone else will be seeing you without clothes on – lucky bear!

Women’s Underwear Styles

Now you know what you want, you need to know what they’re called:

As per their namesake, these bottoms fit like a bikini swim suit. They look similar to a traditional brief but with a lower-rise and the leg cut slightly higher on the hip – bringing sexy back! With a little less coverage but the same amount of comfort as their seaside sister, they can also be found as “string bikinis” where the sides are replaced by thinner material straps to decrease visibility through the clothes.

Like borrowing your man-bear’s boxers, this style is based on the traditional trunk. Cut straight across the hips and legs, boy shorts are super comfy with full coverage, the material coming down below the crotch area. Despite their name, they’ll often be found in cute and feminine materials, cuts and designs.

A low-rise waistband boy short and bikini hybrid; the hipster (or hip-huggers) are cut lower on the leg with a moderate amount of coverage at the back. This style is more easily made seam-free, making it the perfect choice for smoother material and outer dress styles. Can also be seen cut higher around the thigh-to-cheek area and lower at the base of the back to form a “cheekini” or Tanga style!

Arguably offering the most coverage and the most comfort, the brief is the traditional female underwear silhouette. Choice is often offered in terms of waistband rise, leg cut, colour and material. More recently, technological advances have allowed for “shapewear” offering shape control, smoothing and support qualities for under even the tightest of fashion styles. Modern versions have a thicker branded waistband, which became a style status symbol in the 90s via Kate Moss and her cool clan.

Every girl’s sexy staple, these are a “G-string” with a little more material across the sides and back centre parting (called a “T-string” if the material is thinner). Too often accused of being uncomfortable – wedgie, anyone? – thongs remain the best undies for eliminating visible panty lines. Recently the design has been further developed into a “V-string” simply creating a smaller crotch area to allow for low-rise trousers and skirts. We have the 1980s to thank for thongs, g-strings and the bodysuit as infamously worn by Cher and still as popular as ever!

Men’s Underwear Style Guide

Gone are the days when your only choice in the morning was between your Dad’s old fashioned briefs and the muscle-bound model’s favourite – a boxer short. Now we’ve got trunks, hybrid boxer- briefs and even male thongs! A rainbow of colours greet us in the drawer, skyscraper-style waist sizes from low to high-rise and material choices ranging from Merino wool to “breathable synthetics.” Confused? Us too.

But fear not shoppers, Utility Bear is here to guide you through the basics of the modern man’s undergarment essentials, with everything you need to know but were afraid to ask…

What To Consider Before You Choose Your Underwear

There are lots of things that will dictate your choice of ‘tighty-whiteys’. Whether your size requires support or space, how much movement you do during the day, the types of clothes you wear on the outside, your leg size, waist size and whether or not anyone else will be seeing you without clothes on – lucky bear!

Men’s Underwear Styles

Now you know what you want, you need to know what to ask for:

The original underwear staple cruelly classed as unadventurous due to their fanbase consisting mostly of dads, but do not underestimate the classic cut. Their supportive fit – fully around the back, less around the trunk area – means they don’t move around uncomfortably under your clothes. And they’re usually made of a long-wear material like cotton. Comfort and practicality are not to be sniffed at, but they’re as sexy as a knitted Christmas jumper. Opting for a lower-rise waistband will offer the same support but, added to a darker colour, will up the stakes if you’re looking to impress when you undress!

For those who prefer their fruit ‘hanging loose and swinging low’, these are the traditional male go-to. Pioneered by Jacob Golomb, the founder of boxing equipment company Everlast, he tweaked designs for trunks worn by pugilists to create the “boxer short.” The style rose in popularity not just because they were super-comfortable, but because they marked an adult departure from the briefs boys wore as cubs, often made of silk for real gentleman swagger. A long-cut leg and completely loose style (except at the waistband) this short-style underwear allows for optimum space and temperature – i.e. optimum fertility!

The modern hybrid of old and new changed the game thanks to Calvin Klein’s head of menswear design John Varvatos. The uber brands of the 90s changed underwear from something we hid under our clothes to something we flaunt publicly as part of our outfit. Well, the waistbands at least! They do what they say – support like a brief with extra coverage like a boxer. The benefit is purely aesthetic, with longer leg coverage reducing the geek-factor of the brief with every extra inch of material, as well as the adventurous patterns and colours of the modern branded waistband.

Think boxers with a shorter leg, hipster trunks are like the “hot pants” of the male underwear world: fitted to support and avoid over-movement, with an added sexy-factor thrown in. The fit is based on mid-century swimming trunks, hence the name. Arthur Kneibler, a designer at the Wisconsin hosiery company Coopers Inc., introduced his new kind of legless underwear after seeing an ad for French swimwear. He called it the “Jockey short” because the high level of support was reminiscent of jockstraps. In 1971, the company rebranded as our very own Jockey underwear. With the amount of skin on show, they’re probably best-suited to a more athletic physique though!

With that said, they don’t come as daringly skin-showing as the male thong! Growing in popularity as the boys realise the minimalist benefits of a strap-and-pouch undergarment, especially when the Age of the Skinny Jean dawned, the thong provides comfort and support without the visible lines and often uncomfortable movement of looser styles. They split into two main options – the “T- shape” thong and the thinner “G-string” variety. Not for the faint of heart or low of confidence!

Named for the traditional bikini style, but very different to their female counterpart, these undies provide a modern, complimentary mix between a trunk and a thong – a low waist and very high-cut leg with a fitted front cup that is triangular, like a jockstrap to provide support but with coverage and support at the back too. Bikini bottoms often also come in a waistband-only or a “Tanga” band-side style – allowing for extra leg movement making them a great choice for sports. Overall a simple and practical design, suitable for everyday use.
